In line with the Pact for the Future's commitment to an equitable care agenda and in partnership with the World Blind Union, UCLG has launched a "Global Survey on Accessibility and the Engagement of Persons with Disabilities". 

The survey aims at mapping out and informing inclusive local practices by understanding how accessibility and the engagement with organisations of persons with disabilities are addressed by local and regional governments.

We invite you to complete the survey. Your participation and responses will play a vital role in building an equitable future, as a critical step towards cities and territories for all.

As a member of the Taskforce gathered to elaborate this paper, the Committee on Culture of UCLG is pleased to share the White Paper on Championing Local Culture and Economy elaborated in the framework of the Urban 20 city diplomacy initiative chaired by India in 2023.

The paper aims to establish the essence of local culture that shapes identity and how we can foster local culture and economies for long-term resilience, sustainability and continuance. It also presents the associated challenges and puts forward policy recommendations and actions to achieve the above objectives.

La Committee on Culture of UCLG has recently launched its 11^th report entitled “Localising the SDGs with a Cultural Perspective. Initial results of the Seven Keys programme”.

The report builds on the experience and results of the 10 cities and local governments that have organised a “Seven Keys” workshop in the past years, namely: Bulawayo, Burgos, Concepción, Izmir, Lilongwe, Lisbon, Puerto de la Cruz, Saint Louis, Xi'an and Yoff.

It draws very interesting conclusions and link the work done by cities on the localisation of the SDGs through culture and various key frameworks, including the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 SDGs, the toolkit Culture 21 Actions and its 9 Commitments, as well as the UCLG Pact for the Future of Humanity and its axes and entry points.

In the coming months, the USE platform will focus on the priority topic "Inclusive cities", relating to the Sustainable Development Goals. This will include the following:

• access to essential services
• gender equality
• intergenerational solidarity
• urban planning for social cohesion and barrier-free cities 
• cultural vibrancy
• social integration of migrants and refugees
• right to housing
• inclusion of people with disabilities.

On next 25 and 26 October 2023, the city of Bilbao will host the Open Conference on Cultural and Creative Industries and Innovation Contrast, in the context of the CCIs and Innovation Contrast project initiated by the government of Basque Country.

The Conference will be a great opportunity to deepen the work done on innovation in the cultural and creative sectors and its measurement, as well as to get to know different innovation ecosystems from different parts of the world. So far, cases and regional representatives from more than 20 regions of the world have already confirmed their participation.

The Center Rog Creative Hub in Ljubljana - good practice of the Agenda 21 for Culture - is about to open its doors in October 2023 as a space that aims at building strong international partnerships, especially with cultural organisations that work on sustainable design and environmental justice. 

The Center Rog has a programme of study visits (up to 4 days) for organisations interested in learning more about Center Rog and exploring possibilities for long-term cooperation. To mark ASEF's 25th anniversary, ASEF Culture initiated a consultation process among its stakeholders, partners, and friends to look at the current scene in Asia-Europe cultural relations and discuss with like-minded organisations possible strategies for a post-pandemic recovery.

Titled “Recalibrating the Compass: What Future for Asia-Europe Cultural Relations?”, this series of 5 closed-door roundtables facilitated conversations on pressing themes for the arts and culture communities in Asia and Europe with a view to designing a new, more resilient, and participatory approach for the future. The series culminated in a public webinar in early 2023, where findings and recommendations from the roundtables were shared and discussed in an open forum.

The African regional section of UCLG (UCLG Africa) released a call for cities and local or regional governments to express their interest in becoming the next African Capital of Culture in 2024-2025.

The Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments facilitated by United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) has just released its annual report to the UN High-Level Political Level 2023.

The report, available here, includes a paper entitled "Cultural Boost in the Achievement of the SDGs: How local and regional governments are promoting cultural heritage and sustainable cities and territories". 

It explores the cru­cial role of culture in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG11 on cities and human settlements, and it examines projects, pro­grammes and policies developed by local and regional governments (LRGs), civil society organisations, heritage professionals. The paper includes an analysis of positive and negative interactions between cultural policies and actions and each one of the SDGs, and it specifically provides evidence on the interlinkage between cultural policies and heritage and the SDGs 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 13, 16 and 17, where the interlinkages are the strongest.

The City of Gdańsk and the European Committee of the Regions organise every year the Mayor Paweł Adamowicz Award for courage and excellence in the promotion of freedom, solidarity and equality.

The Award represents a strong signal of hope for all elected representatives, officials and ordinary citizens who, despite the risks, live to make democracy work at a local level by supporting better and more open communities.

​The new edition of the award was launched at the CIVEX commission meeting in the European Committee of the Regions on the 20 June 2023.
